Product Review: 1-800-Contacts

Posted on October 7th, 2005 in contact lenses by Oz

About the company: "As the world’s largest contact lens store, 1-800 CONTACTS is dedicated to providing you with a simple, hassle-free way to replace your contact lenses. At 1-800 CONTACTS, you will receive the exact same contact lenses your doctor prescribed, delivered to your door, at a great price. And with an inventory of over 20 million contacts, we are more likely to have your prescription in stock than anyone else, which means you’ll receive your contacts fast."

The big pitch: Up to $60 off every pair of contact lenses, delivered to your door.

It almost seems pointless to review a company like 1-800-Contacts because they have such a strong reputation, such a good concept, and such a corner on the market. But hey, let’s humor those people who aren’t quite sure whether or not they should be sending their hard-earned dinero to the world’s largest contact lens store.

Here’s how it works. Simply choose the contact lenses you want (make, type, strength, etc), add any accessories (like cleaning solutions) that you need, fax off your prescription to 1-800-contacts and they’ll ship your order to your door the same business day.

Now, of course many of us don’t have access to a fax machine, so if you can’t, or prefer not to, fax your prescription, 1-800-Contact will call your doctor directly to confirm your details, and then they’ll send out your order. That adds a little time to the order processing delay, but there’s no charge to you, and the convenience is pretty darn sweet.

When you’ve placed your order, you’ll get an email telling you that it’s confirmed, then you’ll get another to let you know your order has been shipped. For most people in the US, that means your contact lenses are at your door within five days, and in their original manufacturer packaging.

1-800-Contacts always has rebate discounts going on, from $40 off Acuvue contact lenses, to $40 off Biomedics, Optimedics, O2 Optix, and Focus contacts, to a whopping $60 off Focus DAILIES. And that’s just a small sampling of the discounts on offer every day of our trial run.

What we really like about the 1-800-Contacts website is that they don’t just sell lenses. If you need an eye exam, they’ll set up an appointment for you at an optometrist nearby. Just put your phone number into the system and a 1-800-Contacts rep will call you, get your details, and set you up with an appointment close to your home - at a discounted rate.

Never been to an eye doctor before? The website lists an abundant variety of information about what to expect, what products are popular, and information about the eye itself so you know what to be on the look out for if things are wrong.

The Product Trends rating: We really like how this company does the simple stuff well, the harder stuff well, and the really hard stuff even better. No complaints, prices are tight, product range could be a little more extensive, but all in all we’re very impressed. Four and a half stars.
